GROW is one of the models we use as coaches in our practice. It is a simple framework to work on change with people.

GROW is an acronym.

It stands for:

G - Goal

R - Reality

O - Options

W - Will

Here's a breakdown of each step in the model.

  1. Goal: In this stage, I as a coach would help you (the coachee) establish a clear and specific goal. The goal must be well-defined and focused on what you want to materialize. To clarify the goal, I would be asking you questions like: "What is your Vision?" or "What is the desired outcome?" As a coach, I want to understand what is your desired reality.
  2. Reality: Once we have established the desired reality, we need to examine and get full understanding of the current reality or situation. This involves an honest and objective assessment of the your current state in relation to the goal. I can ask questions like: "What is your current situation?" We want to understand your current progress, your resources, or any blockers that prevent you from taking action.
  3. Options: In this stage, we brainstorm and explore different options and strategies to help the you move from the current reality toward the desired goal. The focus is on generating a range of potential solutions or actions. Questions to prompt this phase might include: "What are some possible ways to reach your goal?" or "What options do you have?"
  4. Will (or Way Forward): The final step of the GROW model is to identify the specific actions that you are willing and committed to take. You, as a coachee, select one or more options from the previous stage and formulates a concrete plan of action. The questions to think about would be: "What will you do next?" or "What steps will you take, and when?"

This is a very basic model but it encapsulates the fundamentals of coaching. You can use it for self-coaching as well.

  1. Build a Vision
  2. Do a full audit of the Current State
  3. Learn how to create Options
  4. Take focused Action

To get to point B one must first understand the Point A.

So let’s start with the Current State.

What is your current state?
